TV – Is It Just Entertainment?

Do you have a favorite TV show? Have you ever wondered what draws you to it? It might make you laugh or cry. It might even upset you at times, but none of these things bring you back to your couch week after week at the same time. Chances are that y0u see yourself in at least one of the characters. How your personality is split up between characters seems to be related to the length of the show as well. There's usually one character in a half hour show that you relate to the most, but for hour long shows you might see aspects of yourself in many characters. Continue Reading...

Today is the Day

God is on a mission to redeem the world.  He has chosen, at this point in human history, to do that through his Church.  With that in mind, if we are followers of Christ then we cannot afford to waste this day, this week, this month, this year, or this life.  In this world, there is an enemy that wants to destroy us and keep us from living out the unique mission that God has for us during this life.  That is especially true in America, where there are many idols all around us to tempt us away from living a radical life that is sold out in order to fulfill our roles in the mission of God in this world.

Let's choose to be different this week.  Let's live our lives on fire for the God of heaven and earth.  Let's engage the world... not just the people who we are comfortable with or other Christians, but people who are far from Christ.  Life is short, and God has big plans for us.  Let's live like that this week!  Let's go into the places where we have typically been afraid.  Let's take risks for the sake of God's mission to this world.  Let's choose not to get caught up in all of the things in this world that would seek to destroy us, but instead we will wake up each day and give our lives away for the sake of Christ and for everyone who is lost.  Today is the day!

The Church & Culture

The Church is described in the Bible as a body with many parts. Just like the human body, the body of Christ grows and changes over time and so does the environment around it. This Thursday at 2PM ET, Gabe Lyons of Q ideas and Pastor Tim Keller from Redeemer Presbyterian Church will be holding a live webinar on "the new generation's interplay between the church and culture." Check out WaterBrook Multnomah's writeup on the event for more information. Continue Reading...

A Perspective on Valentine’s Day

If you pay attention to just about any beer commercial, you'll probably notice a theme... men are portrayed as simple-minded idiots who only think about sex.  While I have no problem with men making fun of themselves (we do it all the time in the Journeymen podcasts), it bothers me sometimes that masculinity in America is often so misportrayed.  Men are often deceived into thinking that it's okay if they act stupid and simple, that they don't love their wives or girlfriends well, and that they have no higher purpose in life than to earn paychecks, drink beer, and lust after attractive women.

Valentine's Day is one example of what I'm talking about.  For some reason, there is this concept out there that men are disengaged, insensitive meat heads 364 days of the year.  But on one magical day of the year... Valentine's day... we must rise to the occasion, pull ourselves up by our boot straps, and be the romantic, sensitive machines that our wives need us to be.  If only for one day...
